Getting started with Pen-Depot Research Injection Pens
New to Pen-Depot Research Injection Pens? You're not alone. Many people are just starting their personal research journey and looking to add a Pen-Depot Research Injection Pen to their protocol. This page covers what you need to know before your first use.
Before you begin
Many online resources — videos, podcasts, and blogs — cover reconstituting research compounds, loading Pen-Depot Research Injection Pens, and injection techniques.
These pens are used for many purposes and we assume researchers have a basic working knowledge of intended use, disassembly, cartridge loading, and reassembly. For that reason, we do not include printed instructions with orders.
Test your technique first using a non-active solution. Do not test with your compound. We are not responsible for product loss.

Pen specifications
Calibration
All Pen-Depot Research Injection Pens are calibrated at 0.01 mL per unit — the same as a standard insulin syringe.
Capacity
We offer 60-unit and 80-unit capacity pens. Choose based on your research protocol and dose volumes.
Cartridge requirements
All Pen-Depot Research Injection Pens use ONLY 3 mL with 11 mm long-stopper cartridges. If your research involves pre-filled cartridges, confirm they match this specification before ordering.
Plunger care
- The plunger is a corkscrew mechanism — it needs to turn under your finger as you press it back into the pen body.
- Push gently. Force will bend or break the plunger.
The plunger will not advance without a cartridge installed in the holder. If you turn the dial without a cartridge inserted, the unit will appear to be defective. It requires resistance to actuate.
Disassembling your pen
"Where is my cartridge holder?"
We promise — it's there.
To remove the cartridge holder:
- Pull the pen apart (don't unscrew first) to remove the pen cap and expose the cartridge holder.
- Then unscrew the cartridge holder from the pen body.
If you unscrewed the pen first by mistake, the cartridge holder will be hidden inside the pen cap. Just screw the pen back together, then pull it apart and unscrew the cartridge holder independently.
Reassembling
In V2 models, the pen body threads may be a little stiff the first few times — they require extra pressure to start when reattaching the cartridge holder. This is normal.
